UNCTAD - AIB 2020 Award for Best Research on Investment and Development

Congratulations to Yamlaksira Getachew (PhD 2018). Yamlak's paper "Contract Enforcement Institutions and MNE Integration Strategies: Implications for Exit from The Least-Developed Countries," based on his thesis (supervised by Paul Beamish), was the winner of the Academy of International Business (AIB) UNCTAD - AIB 2020 Award for Best Research on Investment and Development. This award was announced through a virtual ceremony on July 8, 2020 during the AIB Annual Meeting.

CEMS Philippe Louvet Innovation Award for developing a new learning project for students in the CEMS Master in International Management (MIM) 

Ivey’s Andreas Schotter, EMBA ’04, PhD ’09, is part of a trio of professors who won the inaugural CEMS Philippe Louvet Innovation Award for developing a new learning project for students in the CEMS Master in International Management (MIM). Ivey offers the highly regarded CEMS MIM in its MSc Program. 

The winning team is comprised of Schotter, an associate professor of General Management and International Business; Ladislav Tyll, a lecturer at the University of Economics (VSE) Prague; and Massimo Garbuio, an Associate Professor in Entrepreneurship at the University of Sydney Business School. They teamed up with four corporate partners, one NGO, and a number of faculty and students to develop a project that offers CEMS students a solid learning experience based in both online and offline methods.

2nd prize for Best Paper in Innovation Management awarded by the Strascheg Institute for Innovation, Transformation and Entrepreneurship

Ivey Professor Klaus Meyer, with co-authors Nina Rosenbusch, Michael Gusenbauer, Isabella Hatak, and Matthias Fink, received 2nd prize for the Best Paper in Innovation Management presented by the Strascheg Institute for Innovation, Transformation and Entrepreneurship.  Their paper titled "Innovation Offshoring, Institutional Context and Innovation Performance: A Meta-Analysis", recently published in the Journal of Management Studies, analyses the performance implications of conducting innovation activities outside a firm's home country.

Journal of World Business Best Paper Award

Congratulations to Associate Professor Andreas Schotter, along with co-authors Olha Buchel (New England Complex Systems Institute) and Tatiana Vashchilko (University of Calgary). Their paper “Interactive visualization for research contextualization in international business” was awarded the Journal of World Business 2018 Best Paper Award.  This award was announced at the 2019 Academy of Management Conference held August 9-13, 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Best Dissertation Winner, Academy of Management Conference

Congratulations to Max Stallkamp (PhD 2018) and Andreas Schotter (supervisor). Max's thesis "Subnational, regional, digital: Contemporary perspectives on the internationalization of firms" was the winner of the International Theme Committee (ITC) Emerald Best International Dissertation Award. This award was announced at the 2019 Academy of Management Conference held August 9-13, 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dwarka Chakravarty (PhD 2018) was one of the four finalists for the IM Division Best Dissertation Award. This award was announced at the 2019 Academy of Management Conference held August 9-13, 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Journal of International Business Studies 50th Anniversary Gold Medalists

Two Ivey International Business Professors were recognized for exceptional contributions to the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the journal.  

Professor Paul Beamish, Director of Ivey’s International Business Institute, was awarded a Gold Medal for scholarly services in recognition for his contribution as the Editor in Chief of the Journal of International Business Studies from 1992 until 1997. He was also awarded a Gold Medal for Research in recognition of having made 17 substantive contributions to JIBS to date.

Professor Klaus Meyer, Professor of International Business, was awarded a Gold Medal in recognition of having made 13 substantive contributions in JIBS over the course of his career.

Current Ivey faculty members have published a total of over 40 refereed articles in JIBS since 1987.  

Best Dissertation Finalists, Academy of International Business Conference

Two of Ivey’s recent PhD graduates were finalists for the Buckley and Casson Academy of International Business Dissertation Award, distributed at the Academy of International Business Conference held June 24-27, 2019 in Copenhagen. Dwarka Chakravarty and Max Stallkamp both graduated from Ivey’s PhD program in 2018. The award recognizes superior doctoral dissertations in International Business. This marks the third consecutive year that Ivey graduates have received this recognition.

Research Merit Awards

At Ivey's annual Faculty Retreat on May 7, 2019 Ivey faculty were honoured for making an impact in research, the classroom, and service. In total, 19 faculty members received awards. Three International Business faculty members were among the 2019 recipients:

• Professor Paul Beamish;
• Associate Professor Andreas Schotter;
• Professor Klaus E. Meyer.

SSE Gunnar Hedlund Award                                                                                                                                                                                                     Congratulations to Ivey PhD graduate Yamlak Getachew, who was the recipient of the Stockholm School of Economics Gunnar Hedlund Award from the European  International Business Academy (EIBA). He received this award for Best PhD Thesis in International Business.     Yamlak's thesis was also a finalist for both the AIB's and AOM's (IB Division) best dissertation awards in 2018.

Canada China Business Council 40th Anniversary Honourees

Professor Paul Beamish, Director of Ivey’s International Business Institute, was honoured during last week’s Canada China Business Council (CCBC) Business Forum and Gala Banquet, held in Beijing.

Beamish was one of eight Canada China Business Excellence Award Honourees at the event. Other honourees included former prime minister Jean Chrétien and Quebec politician Jean Charest.

The award, part of the celebration of CCBC’s 40th anniversary in Beijing, recognizes those who have made significant contributions to Canada-China relations and to economic engagement between the two countries.

Research Merit Awards

The Research Merit Awards recognize Ivey’s outstanding faculty who have demonstrated productivity and achievement in research publications, which is an important measure of our success. Three International Business faculty members were among the 2018 recipients:

• Professor Paul Beamish;
• Assistant Professor Andreas Schotter;
• Professor Klaus E. Meyer.

Professor Schotter also received the Early Career Impact Award which is presented to a pre-tenure Ivey faculty member for significant research impact early in their career.

Professor Meyer also received the Academic Impact Award which is presented to an Ivey faculty member for a highly-cited article published in a management journal.

The 2018 Academy of Management Conference was held on August 10-14 in Chicago, Illinois.

Congratulations to Professor Klaus Meyer, who received CEIBS Best Paper Award (International Management Division). His paper, co-authored by K. Kalasin, was entitled "Stigma Avoidance and the Delay of Foreign Exits of Emerging Economy Multinational Enterprises."

Congratulations to Associate Professor Andreas Schotter and Assistant Professor Vanessa Hasse, along with their co-author Duckjung Shin. Their article, Multinational enterprises within cultural space and place: Integrating cultural distance and tightness-looseness, was one of three finalists for the 2018 International Human Resource Management Scholarly Research Award. 

The 2018 Academy of International Business Conference was held on June 25-28 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Academy of Management Conference

The 2017 Academy of Management Conference was held on August 4-8 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Awards:
On August 7, 2017, Professor Paul Beamish was awarded the 2017 PWC Strategy& Eminent Scholar Award in recognition of his life-time contribution in the International Business field. Participants in this session included: Seung Ho Park, China Europe International Business School (Chair); Jaideep Anand, The Ohio State University (Discussant); Andrew Delios, National University of Singapore (Discussant); Art Kleiner, PwC (Discussant); and Ram Mudambi, Temple University (Discussant).

Congratulations to Vanessa Hasse (PhD 2016) and Paul Beamish, supervisor. Vanessa’s thesis “Responses to Subpar Performance in Foreign Subsidiaries” received the IM Division Best Dissertation Award, and was a Finalist for the A.I.B. Best Dissertation Award.

Michael Sartor’s (PhD 2014) paper, "Host market corruption, subsidiary strategies and market exit", was recognized for the following:

• Nominee: William H. Newman Award for Best Conference Paper Based on a Dissertation.
• Finalist: Douglas Nigh Award for Cross-Disciplinary Research.
• Paper selected for inclusion in the Best Paper Conference Proceedings.

Congratulations to Michael Sartor (PhD Grad) and Paul Beamish, advisor. Michael’s thesis, “Essays on the Relationship Between Host Market Corruption and Multinational Enterprise Strategy” won the Udayan Rege Best Doctoral Dissertation Award. The award was presented at the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada Conference recently held in Edmonton, AB. Notably, Michael’s thesis was previously awarded the 2015 Academy of International Business Best Thesis Award. This is an impressive accomplishment and Ivey commends all of your hard work!

Arlene MacDougall, Oana Branzei and a Western faculty team have just been awarded an Interdisciplinary Initiatives award for their proposal, Global Mental Health INcubators for Disruptive Solutions (“Global MINDS @ Western”). With a key focus on emerging leaders, the cornerstone of the project is its Summer Institutes, which will bring students and faculty from Western University and Africa together face-to-face each summer to develop specific responses to the complex challenge of the global burden of mental disorders. This project, funded for $200,000 over a three-year period, will bring recognition and action to this very important issue. Congratulations to the entire team on this award!

Brian Pinkham, Assistant Professor in General Management, won the 2014 Best Reviewer Award at the Academy of International Business Conference in Washington, DC.

At the recent business meeting of the Academy of Management Perspectives, held at the Academy of Management Conference, the Most Cited Article from 2009-2013 Award was presented to Ivey assistant professor, Brian Pinkham and his co-authors, Mike Peng, ”Sunny” Li Sun, and Hao Chen. Their article titled “The Institution-Based View as a Third Leg for a Strategy Tripod” appeared in Academy of Management Perspectives in August 2009, 23(3): 63-81. This is quite the achievement, and we congratulate Brian on this accomplishment!

Oana Branzei, Associate Professor in General Management, along with co-authors N. Antadze and H. Lin, won the 2014 Routledge Best Paper Award in Social Partnership at the International Cross Sector Social Interactions Symposium for their paper "A process model of convening for social change: How ENGOs (re)build civic social capital".  In addition, along with M.J. Le Ber, Oana is the 2014 Optimize the Real World Winner, Stamping Scheduling at an Automobile Parts Company, FICO.  

Megan (Min) Zhang, PhD candidate, was a finalist for the Palgrave Macmillan Best Paper Award and the AJBS Best Paper Award for her work entitled, “Evolution of the MNE Ownership-Subsidiary Performance Relationship” at 2014 Association of Japanese Business Studies Annual Conference.

Megan was also a finalist for the 2014 Temple/AIB Best Paper Award for her work entitled, "Significance, Substance, and Dynamics of Regulatory Response: Japanese MNEs' Ownership Strategies in China and the United States".

Centre faculty researcher Carl Fey along with his co-authors won the 2013 JIBS Decade Award for their article "MNC knowledge transfer, subsidiary absorptive capacity and HRM" published in Journal of International Business Studies, 34: 586-599.

Michael Sartor, PhD candidate, received the Best Student Paper Award for his work entitled, “Host Markets, Informal Institutions and Strategy Formation” at 2013 Administrative Sciences Association of Canada Annual Conference. Michael also received the GWU-CIBER Best Paper on Emerging Markets Award for his work entitled, “The Impact of Informal Institutions on MNE Strategy” at 2013 Academy of Management Annual Meeting.

Majid Eghbali-Zarch, PhD candidate, received the Palgrave Macmillan Best Paper Award for his work entitled, “MNE Dynamics, Distance and the Role of Space and Place in the Organization of MNE’s Locations: Evidence from Japanese MNEs” at 2013 Association of Japanese Business Studies Annual Conference.

Jean-Louis Schaan, Professor of General Management, is the 2013 Carol Stephenson Excellence in EMBA Teaching Award (Spring & Fall) recipient, Ivey Business School.

Oana Branzei, Associate Professor of General Management, won the 2013 Best Symposium Award for her work entitled "Vulnerability to Resilience: Dynamic Modeling of Collective Agency through Social Enterprise Ecosystems" at the Academy of Management Annual Conference.

Education Excellence Award from the Canada China Business Council

Ivey has received the inaugural Education Excellence Award from the Canada China Business Council  (CCBC) for outstanding achievements in expanding Canada’s relationship with China through education, research, alumni relations and student/faculty exchanges.

Ivey was unanimously chosen by independent judges to receive the Gold Award in the education category.  The award was presented by His Excellency Zhang Junsai, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Canada at a gala event in Montreal on November 27, 2012. Paul Beamish, Director of Ivey’s Asia Management Institute and Engaging Emerging Markets Centre, and Jan De Silva, Associate Dean, Ivey Asia, accepted the award on behalf of the School at the awards ceremony and CCBC AGM and Policy Conference in Montreal. The event was attended by David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, as well as other dignitaries.

Institute Director Paul Beamish was awarded the International Management Outstanding Educator Award by the Academy of Management in August 2012.

Congratulations to Ph.D. candidate in general management and a centre doctoral researcher Bassam Farah who is a recipient of the prestigious Robert Bertram Doctoral Research Award. The Canadian Foundation for Governance Research awards this honour to support Canadian-based research on corporate governance. The funding received will support Bassam's research project with his advisor, Professor Paul Beamish, on "Canadian-Subsidiary Governance".

Michael Roberts, a Ph.D. candidate in general management and a centre doctoral researcher, is among the five new Post Graduate Research Fellows for 2011-12 announced by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. Roberts has extensive knowledge of South Korea, and will further develop his previous research on international returnees and the capturing of foreign knowledge by multi-national enterprises in emerging markets. 

Congratulations to Centre faculty researcher Professor Chris Williams on his appointment to the Walter A. Thompson Faculty Fellowship for a one-year term ending February 28, 2012. Chris is an Assistant Professor of International Business. Originally from the U.K., Chris has also lived and worked in Germany and the Netherlands. Prior to joining Ivey, he taught at the Amsterdam Business School. Chris’ research interests fall into the broad areas of entrepreneurship and organization in multinational enterprises, managing offshore outsourcing and transition of knowledge-intensive work overseas, and national systems of innovation.

BASSAM FARAH, PhD Candidate, received a Best Reviewer Award from Journal of International Business Studies at 2012 Academy of International Business (AIB) Annual Meeting.

Institute Director Paul Beamish celebrates milestone in publishing career

Beamish has just had his 100th research paper accepted for publication. The paper, “Geographic and Product Diversification in Charitable Organizations,” co-authored with Ivey PhD graduates Geoff Kistruck of Ohio State University and Israr Qureshi of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, will be published in the Journal of Management in 2011.

In addition to learning his 100th paper would be published, Beamish also had his 50th book published and saw the graduation of the 25th PhD student he has supervised, all in 2010. Read the Financial Post’s story on Beamish’s 100^th publication.

Centre faculty researcher Dr. Andreas Schotter (EMBA'04, PhD'09), Professor at Thunderbird School of Global Management has been selected as a "WSJ Distinguished Professor of the Year, 2010". The award, given by The Wall Street Journal-In-Education, recognizes only 10 professors nationwide for their impactful use of discipline-specific articles and topical discussion questions from WSJ and WSJ.com to effectively help students understand global strategy, emerging markets, and multinational corporations.

Congratulations to Centre faculty researcher Professor Jean-Louis Schaan (PhD'83) on his recent appointment to the Donald F. Hunter Professorship of International Businessfor a two-year period ending October 2012. Jean-Louis is a professor of Strategic Management and International Business at Ivey. His research focuses on international joint ventures, strategic alliances, strategic management and international business.  This professorship was established by Maclean Hunter in recognition of the country’s critical need for managers who are able to compete effectively in an increasingly global economic arena.

Centre faculty researcher Lynn Imai's recent article “The culturally intelligent negotiator: The impact of cultural intelligence (CQ) on negotiation sequences and outcomes” co-authored with Michele J. Gelfand, has been selected for ScienceDirect’s Top 25 Hottest Articles in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, April-June, 2010.

Dr. Suhaib Riaz (PhD 2009) is the recipient of the ASAC biennial award for the best Canadian doctoral dissertation in administrative sciences, 2008-2010 at 2010 Administrative Sciences Association of Canada Conference.

The Selection Committee for the William G. Davis Chair in International Tradeis delighted to announce that David Sharp will be the new Chair holder for a five year period until June 30, 2014.

David is an Associate Professor of Managerial Accounting and Control at Ivey and serves as the Program Faculty Director, International Opportunities. His research interests are mainly in international accounting, international business ethics, cross-cultural differences in the determinants of escalation of commitment, and control in multinational enterprises and international joint ventures.

The Selection Committee for the William Shurniak Professorship in International Business is delighted to announce that Shih-Fen Chen has been awarded this professorship for a five year period until October 2014.

Shih-Fen is an Associate Professor of International Business at Ivey. His main research focuses on the institutional role of branding in facilitating inter-firm cooperation. He has developed a model that can predict the optimal allocation of branding rights between two or more specialist firms working together to serve consumers. His other research interests include cross-border acquisitions, international joint ventures, and offshore outsourcing.

2009 Academy of Management Annual Meeting

We congratulate professor emeritus Dr. Harry Lane on receiving the Outstanding Educator Award at the 2009 Academy of Management Conference.  The award recognizes continuous excellence and innovation in teaching international management at all levels and in a global context.

Dr. Geoff Kistruck (PhD 2009) received the best PhD Dissertation Award of 2008 from two divisions of the Academy of Management:  International Management, and Public and Nonprofit Management. The awards were conferred at the Academy of Management this year.

Dr. Geoff Kistruck (PhD 2009) paper "The Interplay of Form, Structure, and Embeddedness in Organizational Social Entrepreneurship" received the Best Paper in Social Entrepreneurship Award.

Dr. Suhaib Riaz (PhD 2009) received a Best Reviewer Award.

Dr. Jane Lu (PhD 2001) and Prof. Qian Gu's paper "The Linkage between Inward Investment and Outward Investment in the Venture Capital Industry" was a Douglas Nigh Award Finalist.

Dr. Changhui Zhou (PhD 2002) and Prof. Mingkun Liu's paper "MNC Evolution in China: Antecedents of R&D Center Establishment" was a Best Paper on Emerging Markets Award Finalist

Dr. Suhaib Riaz (PhD 2009) and Prof. Glenn Rowe's paper "Expatriate Deployment and Subsidiary Performance Over Time: A Co-Evolution Perspective" won the Best Paper Award in the International Business Division of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (ASAC) 2009.

GEORGE PENG received the Douglas Nigh Award given to the most innovative paper that adopts an interdisciplinary perspective.

JING’AN TANG (now at Sacred Heart University) was a finalist for the Barry Richman Outstanding Dissertation Research Award.

YULIN FANG (now at City Polytechnic University), FRANK JIANG, SHIGE MAKINO (now at Chinese University of Hong Kong), and PAUL BEAMISH received a Samsung Distinguished Paper Award. The paper was also the IM division’s nominee for the AOM-wide Carolyn Dexter Best International Paper Award.

GEOFF KISTRUCK, ISRAR QURESHI and PAUL BEAMISH received a Samsung Distinguished Paper Award.

LAURA GUERRERO received a Best Reviewer Award.

2008 Academy of International Business (AIB) Annual Meeting

JULIAN BIRKINSHAW (now at London Business School) was elected a Fellow of the AIB.

PAUL BEAMISH and ANTHONY GOERZEN (now at University of Victoria) each received Best Reviewer 2008 Awards from Journal of International Business Studies.

GUY HOLBURN and a co-author from Duke University shared the 2008 Haynes Prize for Most Promising Scholar (under the age of 40). Their paper was also one of the 10 finalists for the AIB Best Conference Paper Award.

JING’AN TANG (now at Sacred Heart University) was a finalist for the 2008 Haynes Prize for Most Promising Scholar.

ANDREW DELIOS (now at National University of Singapore) supervised two of the four dissertations – including the winner – which were finalists from the 42 theses submitted for the 2008 Richard N. Farmer Dissertation Award.

UDAYAN REGE BEST DISSERTATION AWARD

The winner this year is Dr. Chris Changwha Chung (PhD 2006) , “The Evolution of International Joint Ventures: Multiple Waves of Structural Change, Performance, and Survival,” Richard Ivey School of Business, The University of Western Ontario, Canada.  The award was conferred at the Administrative Science Association of Canada Annual Meeting this year.

2007 European International Business Academy Annual Meeting

GUNNAR HEDLUND AWARD

In 1997 the Boards of the Institute of International Business (IIB) at the Stockholm School of Economics, and the European International Business Academy (EIBA), decided to launch an international award for the best PhD thesis in the field of International Business (IB) – The “Gunnar Hedlund Award.”  A substantial yearly prize was set up, today announcing to €10,000.

The Chairman of the jury, Professor Örjan Sölvell remarks: “The idea behind the award is that it shall act as a vehicle to stimulate PhD candidates around the world in the field of International Business, and also to commemorate Gunnar’s important work in the field.”

Four finalists had a chance to present their theses at the 33rd EIBA Annual Conference at the University of Catania, Italy, on December 15, 2007.

The winner this year was Chris Changwha Chung, “The Evolution of International Joint Ventures: Multiple Waves of Structural Change, Performance, and Survival,” Richard Ivey School of Business, The University of Western Ontario, Canada.
